A parent of a middle school student I would like to see the calendar go back to including 2 weeks for Christmas/New Year's break. 2014-10-06 15:31
A parent of an elementary school student Looks good to me! 2014-10-06 15:33
A parent of a high school student We do not need the Spring Break to be an entire school week. I wish that you would consider taking it away, because we only have about a month of school left at that point in the year. That way our school year would not be as long. 2014-10-06 15:34
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Starting school before labor day seems unproductive and disruptive for the students to me. I would like to recommend the first day after labor day. 2014-10-06 15:35

A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a high school student   2014-10-06 15:37
A parent of an elementary school student Many families are made up of one or more federal employees, given the area that we live in. To accommodate those families, aligning days off with federal holidays would recognize the composition of your communities. For instance, instead of holding an early dismissal on Columbus Day (a federal holiday) and then closing the school the next Friday (not a federal holiday), many families scramble for child care options because they had the federal holiday off. 2014-10-06 15:39
A parent of an elementary school student Start school AFTER labor day with less breaks. Re-evaluate the calendar so students are in school more from Sept-June without so many 1/2 days and off days. 2014-10-06 15:40
A parent of an elementary school student Please less teacher training days. Can we divide county in half- North and South- to reduce number of inclement weather days for whole county? Seems with north county has weather rarely is it seen in south and vice versa. 2014-10-06 15:40
A parent of a middle school student why do Private School finish school over a week or more than Public schools. why so many days off during the year? 2014-10-06 15:40
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I would like to see spring break shortened by 3 days. Thursday-Monday is a sufficient break. Let us out earlier when the weather is better. 2014-10-06 15:41
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a high school student Please consider taking away off days during the year and start school after Labor Day and complete by Memorial Day. 2014-10-06 15:41
A parent of a high school student I support using days during spring break to make up for inclement weather. 2014-10-06 15:41
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I would love to see a complete overhaul of the calendar. Why can't professional development days be combine into one day off to help working parents instead of several early dismissals? Why can't those days also be on a Monday or Friday instead of the middle of the week? AACPS is the only county I know that shuts down the whole school system when high schools have exams. The bizarre January schedule is ridiculous. Keep them in school all day, send them to study hall. Lastly, either have the whole week of Thanksgiving off or the whole week of Easter off...not both. This long school year is not fair to families or teachers. It feels like you are moving to a year around school calendar. If you are, please do it already. It feels like we are stuck in between both calendars. 2014-10-06 15:42
A parent of an elementary school student The thanksgiving break should not be a week long. All of the days off school for holidays extends the school year too far into June. 2014-10-06 15:43
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I prefer a later start date. August 24th is too early. I'd also prefer a shorter break in the spring. 2014-10-06 15:44
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Looks good. 2014-10-06 15:44
An AACPS employee I think the calendar looks good and does not need to be revised. 2014-10-06 15:44
A parent of a middle school student I agree with the additional snow day added to the calendar, and the removal of a Spring Break holiday "day" in the event of more than 5 accumulated snow days. 2014-10-06 15:45
A parent of an elementary school student School should not start until THE DAY AFTER LABOR DAY......PERIOD!!!!! 2014-10-06 15:46
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Start school after Labor day and decrease Thanksgiving and Easter holidays to just the 4 days. 2014-10-06 15:46

A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I wish you would follow other districts in addibg time to school day to reduce days in school . Starting before Labor Day and ending in mid-June makes it very hard for families to plan time with relatives for vacations. It also increases the probability of student burnout. We found the last two weeks of school last year had practically ok real instruction, and to have so many half days built into the last week, it didn't allow for much real learning but prevented families from doing other thibgs. 2014-10-06 15:48
A parent of an elementary school student The proposed calendar is a simpler protocol for inclement weather. It outlines how makeup days will be accomodated. This avoids any confusion and it is in black and white and not left up to interpretation. 2014-10-06 15:48
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I thought we weren't going back until after the labor day holiday. We go back earlier and earlier and get out after school systems that go after us. They have less than six weeks for and you load the entire break with stressful summer work. I don't see any benefit to new calander, frankly you haven't considered the parents or the kids. Shame on you higher ups again. 2014-10-06 15:49

A parent of an elementary school student -Start school after Labor Day Weekend -Eliminate the 2 alloted Jewish holidays..What religion is next !? -Reduce # of 1/2 days and days off due to teacher training 2014-10-06 15:52
A parent of a middle school student I wish that the make up snow days were at the end of the school year and not during spring break because I know I normally plan a family vacation during that time in advance and if the days are made up then my children would end up missing school because airline tickets and or hotel reservations are already made. I know there has to be other families in this predicament. 2014-10-06 15:54
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student Thanksgiving week should be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday only. There is no need for 2 days for conferences, especially with current technology and the ability to communicate with parents via email and phone. 2014-10-06 15:55
An AACPS employee Take away a full week for spring break and go to only 3 days off school. 2014-10-06 15:56
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a high school student The early dismissal days are challenging for working parents. It is very difficult to imagine so many are necessary. Changing the start date for fall athletics from year to year (since late 1970s this had been a firm 8/15, last year 8/14, this year 8/13). Parents who have worked hard to live within rigid county requirements (children/athletes must attend all practices before school starts including Labor Day weekend to qualify to play on team. These are not family friendly requirements. Stick firm on 8/15. Don't move that date. If date must move, allow children to participate who can PROVE their vacation or work plans preceded the change. Once the schedule is set, don't mess with spring break. The child care implications are devastating. Why have a spring break if families cannot take a vacation? I am all for balance. It's time to factor in the need for family time and reasonableness. One last comment, go back to all day school during exams. The upheaval of early dismissal and the floating school closures is untenable. 2014-10-06 16:04
An AACPS employee We should start after Labor Day! Going 5 full days and then a 3 day week is tough on starting routines. 2014-10-06 16:05
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student December 23 should always be a holiday. Families who travel for Christmas find it too challenging to reach their destinations with just one travel day before Christmas. I would prefer to have a holiday on the 23rd in exchange for one of the other days in November or January. 2014-10-06 16:06
A parent of an elementary school student Closing the schools year after year for 2 Jewish holidays in September, right after the start of the school year, is extremenly disruptive and burdensome to students and parents' schedules. These are not widely recognized holidays in the work place and there is no need to close the schools for them. An alternative would be to allow students who celebrate the holidays to take the time off (as excused absences) but keep the schools open for the rest. Also, no similar approach is taken to Muslim and other religious holidays, so this approach is clearly discriminatory. Additionally, closing the schools on the Friday after Columbus day but keeping them open on Columbus day does not make sense given parents' schedules. The overriding objective of developing a sensible school calendar should be to keep children in school and close the schools as close to the widely recognized public/federal holidays, especially in our region of high federal/government employment. It's about time this Board took notice of that. 2014-10-06 16:08
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student We do not need a week off for spring break, it is too long of a break in the middle of the school year. We need to attend during spring break so that students can come to school later. Students need to return to school after labor day, many students or parents are not ready to go back to school. The attendance at the beginning of the year is often poor due to vacations or parents taking long holiday weekends. This would also go give schools an extra week to clean up and be ready for teachers and students. 2014-10-06 16:09
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student The school year ends too late in June, and begins too early. We support a school year which begins after Labor Day and ends shortly after Memorial Day. It is inconsistent to have children begin school, then have a break(s), then begin again. Beginning after the Labor Day holiday ensures a positive transition into the school year. Dragging the end of the school year out, so that there may be more "in-service" days or additional days at spring break, feels cumbersome. Not to mention, by the end of the school year, elementary and middle school students are rarely learning anything. They're completing busy work, cleaning out lockers and classrooms, and even watching videos. Finally, a stronger, longer season is good for our state's tourism and activity economy. 2014-10-06 16:14
A parent of an elementary school student I agree with adding an additional day to the number of snow days allotted, however, is there a way to enhance the bus notifications to that you can make the "call" to cancel or not cancel later in the morning? This way, you're cancelling for an actual snow/ice/weather event, and not just the threat of one. 2014-10-06 16:14
A parent of an elementary school student, Other I think school should go back to opening after LABOR DAY!!!!! 2014-10-06 16:15
A parent of an elementary school student Good ideas 2014-10-06 16:18
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Would like the school year to begin after Labor Day. 2014-10-06 16:20
An AACPS employee, A parent of a middle school student I would prefer getting out for Christmas before the 23rd as it makes it difficult to travel to be with family during the holiday. Also, the middle and elementary need half days during PARCC testing as it makes for a VERY long day for them and to expect them to then have meaningful instruction is a bad expectation as they are mentally exhausted from testing. 2014-10-06 16:21
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student I like the idea of taking days away from Spring Break to alleviate going well into late June. 2014-10-06 16:23
A parent of an elementary school student No need for a weeklong spring break if parents can not plan a trip because students may need to make up the days for snow. Good Friday & Easter Monday are enough. Students could then get out earlier in the summer 2014-10-06 16:24
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student Go back to having Spring Break as Thursday, Friday and Monday so that the kids can get out of school earlier in June. June 15 or later is too late. The kids have lost interest in their studies by the time the warmer weather arrives. 2014-10-06 16:25
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Why can't school start after Labor Day? 2014-10-06 16:27
A parent of an elementary school student Perhaps professional development days could be held the last week of August rather than scattered during the school year. It seems that the routine of the 5 day school week is constantly interrupted by days off. 2014-10-06 16:29
A parent of an elementary school student   2014-10-06 16:29
An AACPS employee I feel the school year begins too late in August and gets out too late in June. The kids are done by the end of May and June is pure torture. School needs to start and end earlier. June 15th is too late. 2014-10-06 16:37
A parent of a high school student We would prefer to have a fixed date for last day of school and have weather make-up days taken from spring break. Thank you for the opportunity to comment! 2014-10-06 16:40
A parent of an elementary school student I don't understand why days off do not line up will federal holidays. Their are far more federal employees in AA county than Jewish followers. I have to take off for those two holidays to watch my kids but sit home alone on Veterans Presidents Columus.... 2014-10-06 16:48
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I do not like that Winter break doesn't start until 12/24. Many people have family in different states and it creates quite a burden on families that need to travel for Christmas. My children will be missing a few days leading up to Christmas this year and it will happen every year until they graduate or this new calendar setup changes. 2014-10-06 16:48
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I think school should start after labor day and stop letting the kids get out 2 hours early stop with all these holidays except Christmas, thanks giving and Easter all these teacher meeting should be done after school is out the Jewish holiday was never part of kids being out of school too many days being wasted why 2014-10-06 16:51
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I believe the children should have the federal holidays off in lieu of the Jewish holidays. If you look at the data there is a greater number of federal workers than there is Jewish families. Also if a child is Jewish this can be an excused absence. It seems backward to make federal workers find child care for their children for Jewish holidays and then have the kids in school when the parents are home. If the families are Jewish the parents will already be home. 2014-10-06 16:51
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student It's ridiculous that you start school before Labor Day it makes no sense and if you really look at it, it's a waste of money for the county. You have 1-2 days that the kids come in, pay staff, pay air conditioning but yet you still wish to begin school before Labor Day. I can't figure it out. 2014-10-06 16:53
A parent of a high school student I think you now handle what to do if you use more than the built in days for inclement weather during the school year.Taking away days from spring break in a previous determined schedule is great! 2014-10-06 16:54
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student   2014-10-06 16:55
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Ridiculous school starting AUGUST 24 they have too many days that's wasted anyway all they teacher meetings all these other holidays that we never had school should start after Labor Day like other schools in virgina 2014-10-06 16:57
A parent of an elementary school student Lengthen Christmas/Winter Break to two weeks (Sun-Sat/10 school days). Delete days off during the month (Friday, Oct. 16, General Election Day, etc.) move early dismissal from the Monday after Columbus & Veteran's Days to the Friday before. With the large military/federal work force present in the area, allow absences during Federal/Training holidays to be excused, not unexcused. Thank you for your time and consideration. 2014-10-06 16:58
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Please do not start school on the 24th but later. Take away the 3 days of Thanksgiving vacation prior to Thanksgiving Day. They are of NO USE. 2014-10-06 17:01
A parent of an elementary school student Start school after Labor Day. 2014-10-06 17:07
An AACPS employee If we have 6-9 snow days, the days should be added to the end of the year as plans for spring break are usually made early in the fall and cannot be changed. Too many teachers will be out of the building and many families will be on vacation. 2014-10-06 17:11
A parent of a high school student Shorten Spring Break to Good Friday and Easter Monday to be able to end the school year earlier. It makes continuity of lessons difficult with so many days off each school year 2014-10-06 17:11
An AACPS employee Is there a way that we can do away with the week long spring break and go back to the old model of Thursday through Easter Monday break? with the current testing model having more time for PARCC and the amount of students who miss the 1st few weeks of school it would be nice to go back to the students coming back after Labor Day and getting out closer to Memorial Day. 2014-10-06 17:11
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I think Spring Break should be the week after Easter instead of the week before and Monday after, that would reduce the days off by one (moving up the last day of school) and in a year like 2016, when Easter is early, increase the chances of nicer weather for the holiday. 2014-10-06 17:19
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Start school later in day and later in year!!! 2014-10-06 17:20
A parent of a middle school student I believe the 2015-2016 school calendar is good. The need to build in extra possible snow days is warranted. 2014-10-06 17:27
A parent of a high school student   2014-10-06 17:28
A parent of a high school student   2014-10-06 17:35
A parent of an elementary school student Please schedule fewer days off at easter and winter breaks. And throughout the year. Why do kids need days off every single month. They're only in school 10 months. 2014-10-06 17:42
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Starting school on August 24 is much too early. Jewish holidays should be removed from the calendar (religous holidays should only be recognized by each religion by having an excused absence on those religous days) as other religions are not recognized with given days off. Winter break should start before the 24th as it only allows for 8 days off for family to travel. Spring break should be taken back to 3 days off! Thursday, Friday and Monday are more than adequate, especially since this follows the possibilty of many snow days. Put the days back in late school start, Winter break and early start summer. Thanks for asking! 2014-10-06 17:44
An AACPS employee, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Would love to see a start date after labor day, fewer single days off throughout the year (including staff development days), and a later start time for high school. 2014-10-06 17:47
A parent of a high school student I strongly recommend shortening the spring break. School used to be out the Friday and Monday surrounding Easter. That is plenty of time off for the kids. Having six days off at this time extends the school year far too long. Please consider reducing the number of days off around Easter. 2014-10-06 17:48
A parent of a middle school student Shorten Thanksgiving break - they do not need an entire week off! 2014-10-06 17:48
A parent of a middle school student I do not think AACPS should have off for 2 Jewish holidays in September. Very few children are Jewish and very few school systems give off for either of these holidays, let alone both. This is ridiculous, religion should have no effect on what days the kids are out of school. This is the first full month, absolutely NO reason there should be 3 days off to serve a few people. 2014-10-06 17:48
A parent of an elementary school student Allow enought time for Christmas vacation so that families can travel if needed. A start date of 12/24 means no possibility of spending the holiday with out of state family. 2014-10-06 17:49
An AACPS employee, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I would like to see school start the Wednesday after Labor Day. To have Columbus Day and Verterans Day off. Professional Day 2 hour early dismissal days should be on a Friday not Wedneaday. Thank you for your consideration. 2014-10-06 17:52
A parent of an elementary school student School should begin 1 week earlier in August and end 1 week earlier in June. My child is ready to return to school earlier. She is also shut down by the time June arrives. 2014-10-06 17:55
An AACPS employee Kindergarten conferences fall the day before the Memorial Day holiday. Many parents go out of town or have graduations to attend at this time causing them to reschedule with me on my own time. Additionally, many of my parents work at the naval academy and their graduation is always that friday causing major traffic delays and parents to reschedule. Please consider moving them to the following week. 2014-10-06 18:04
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a high school student Parent/teacher conferences should be held after regular school hours therefore allowing the Thanksgiving break from Wednesday through the weekend. The two days that would normally be the conference days should be added to the winter break in December. 2014-10-06 18:04
A parent of an elementary school student I would like a shorter summer break and keep Spring Break. Thank you. 2014-10-06 18:05
A parent of an elementary school student My suggestion is to take two days from the Thanksgiving break and add them to the two days prior to Christmas Eve. Being in school up until Christmas Eve creates travel problems for families traveling out-of-state. 2014-10-06 18:06
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Please stop giving six days off for Spring Break. Three days for Spring Break is plenty. Taking the three extra Slring Break days off the end of the year makes a huge difference. The students would have the possibility of having their last day be Friday June 10 instead of Wednesday June 15. We never had a six day Spring Break when I was a student. Please shorten Spring Break. I would also ask that Parent Teacher Conferences not be days that students miss but I do t have another plan. Maybe have them after school instead? Thank you for taking extra snow days (if needed) away from Soring Break instead of adding them on to the end of the year. While I am sharing, why do students get penalized a day of school for elections? That doesn't make sense. Thank you for listening. Please feel free to contact me at cooperhouseofun@verizon.net. Melissa Cooper 2014-10-06 18:10
An AACPS employee I like the idea of making spring break flexible, but I suggest making only one or two of the days up for compensating for weather. We need a higher level of certainty for the break. Thank you. 2014-10-06 18:11
An AACPS employee start after labor day 2014-10-06 18:20
A parent of an elementary school student Wouldn't it make more sense to tentatively end the school year on June 3 and add days for inclement weather? I'm not sure why you want to say the school year ends on June 10, but it will end earlier depending on how many unused snow days there are at the end of the year..? 2014-10-06 18:21
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student Any way to change schedule is to rethink the whole week for Thanksgiving break.. Yes I know it is for conferences however conferences could be done Monday and Tuesday afternoon so the students go to school Monday and Tuesday and get out 2 hour early. Also rethink the Easter/Spring break. Give the teachers and students Thursday, Friday and Monday. With those ideas we could start after Labor Day. Just a thought from a teacher and parent. 2014-10-06 18:29
A parent of a high school student Thanks giving is too long. Would rather kids have a longer summer and fewer days off for Thanksgiving and in January and February. It is too drawn out. 2014-10-06 18:31
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Have the kids have off for Veterans Day and Columbus Day as Federal employees do. 2014-10-06 18:33
A parent of an elementary school student Please move the "professional development" early-release days from Wednesday to Friday (or, eliminate them entirely.) Having a half-day off in the middle of the week once a month makes no sense. Moving this inconvenience to Fridays would at least make it palatable to families who could then take advantage of a longer weekend. However, I question the necessity of this half-day at all. What kind of "professional development" helps to improve the lives of the students IF THE STUDENTS HAVE TO MISS SCHOOL? This day is actually a huge waste - very little learning takes place on these Wednesdays because it is disruptive to the planning schedules. If such "professional development" is so necessary, it should take place over the summer, and not cause students to miss valuable classroom learning time. 2014-10-06 18:36
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I think the kids should go back after Labor Day and cut out some of the nonsense in service days to make up for it. There are way too many teacher/in service days in the calendar. No other school district does this! 2014-10-06 18:39
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Every year the summer break gets shorter. Can we PLEASE wait until after Labor Day to start school? I understand the required 180 days, however, most of us do not need a week of break at Thanksgiving, Christmas, AND Easter. 2014-10-06 18:43
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student, A parent of a special school student School should start after labor day. 2014-10-06 18:44
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Looks good. 2014-10-06 18:47
A parent of a middle school student I feel the children should not go back to school until after labor day 2014-10-06 18:51
A parent of an elementary school student Make up days should be home based assignments instead of added on at the end of the year. The school year is too long as it is. 2014-10-06 18:51
An AACPS employee, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Please survey whether parents are still interested in having the extended spring break. I prefer not to have that much time off at Spring Break as students have trouble focusing upon their return. 2014-10-06 18:53

A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student begin school after Labor Day 2014-10-06 18:58
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I would like to see the spring break shortened and allow school to end a few days earlier. 2014-10-06 19:01
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I think it looks great. Thank you for all of your efforts! 2014-10-06 19:03
A parent of an elementary school student Make school after Labor Day until June 15th. Make High School start times later 2014-10-06 19:04
A parent of an elementary school student I think it would be better to start after Labor day. It seems harder to get children in the routine of school when they have so many days off in the beginning of the school year 2014-10-06 19:12
A parent of an elementary school student I don't feel.we need a full week off for Spring Break.it seems the kids keep going to school longer and longer to the sunme. Other school systems have their kids go during the week of Thanksgiving. Parent teacher conferences are done after school during other days. 2014-10-06 19:14
A parent of a middle school student I believe students would have more benefit by beginning school after Labor Day with shorter and less days off for Christmas and Spring Break, as well as the abundance of early dismissal days and days off in January. Schools already stay in session until mid June now, that is 2 weeks longer than just 10 or so years ago, while also beginning 10 days earlier than schools did 10 or so years ago. There are too many days off and early dismissal days, making the school year 3 1/2 weeks longer than other school systems in surrounding areas and States. 2014-10-06 19:21
A parent of an elementary school student Have less full professional development days, more shortened days for professional development and allow the students to get out earlier in the summer or start later in the fall. 2014-10-06 19:26
A parent of a high school student Please start on 8/31 -- a week before Labor Day is plenty early. And even out the playing field -- try dropping 1 jewish holiday and adding 1 muslim holiday. Do you even know how many muslims are in AACo vs. practicing jews? 2014-10-06 19:30
A parent of a middle school student Starts too soon...and for high school, hours should have later start. That would demonstrate a real commitment to health of children, not just lip service. 2014-10-06 19:31
A parent of an elementary school student Winter break needs to start earlier than 12/24. That does not give families any time to travel. Be real school board members 2014-10-06 19:43

A parent of a high school student Start school the day after Labor Day and end when the required number of days is achieved. Attend school on Mon & Tue of Thanksgiving week. Eliminate the Monday off at the end of Spring Break. Start high school at 0830 Start middle schools at 0745 Start elementary schools at 0700 Staggered middle & elementary starts as needed. 2014-10-06 19:51
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student School should not be in session on December 23 to allow families time to travel and prepare for Christmas. Many family traditions are held on Christmas Eve. 2014-10-06 19:53

An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student This leaves little time for travel or holiday shopping. If teachers take time off to shop (likely they will need to), what sort of learning will kids be doing anyway? 2014-10-06 20:22
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student You need to take away the 2 hour early dismissals for professional development and when the marking periods end. Both are not needed and take away valuable class time from the students. 2014-10-06 20:23
An AACPS employee Kindergarten conference days should be moved to the half days during the last week of school. Since the report card isn't completed in May any longer it doesn't make sense to conduct the conferences then. 2014-10-06 20:27
A parent of a middle school student Please start at least a week later (preferabley 2 weeks later), stop having professional days in the middle of the year, and end a week later (if you have to). Keep the high schoolers for a full day during exams, so the bus schedule doesn't change and we have more full days instead of so many half days! 2014-10-06 20:35
A parent of a middle school student Why not have the first day of school be after Labor Day as it use to be, many people still take vacations up till then. It's just stupid to have them go back to school for a couple days and then be off for a couple because of Labor Day. 2014-10-06 20:46
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I am very frustrated that schools are open every year on Columbus Day (a State and Federal holiday) and then closed for a professional day later in the same week. Why can't the school system move the professional day to Columbus Day when so many parents have that day off? It would make sense. 2014-10-06 20:47
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I would like to start school after labor day each year and add an extra 10 minutes to each day to make this happen. Thank you! 2014-10-06 20:48
An AACPS employee Needs to start after labor day 2014-10-06 20:51
A parent of an elementary school student I dislike the change where snow days beyond 5 days are taken from spring break. Between January and Spring break is a long stretch for kids. Also, many people travel to be with families for Easter (all of my family lives out of state, my parents in Florida). Adding days to the end of the year, when we know it's possible days may be added and we have a long summer break ahead just makes much more sense. I wish you would put the October teachers training conference on Columbus Day. As one of many federal employees with kids in AA Co. Schools, it's nonsensical that these don't line up. After a holiday I have when my kids are in school, I then have to take leave just days later for this conference. Your schedule is just not friendly for working families! (This includes the two day semester break in January with 4 half days that's hard to take leave for after a 10 day break in December.) 2014-10-06 20:57
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a high school student I would like to find a way to have the schools open after Labor Day, possibly by adding a little bit of time on to each school day or eliminating some of the early dismissal days. 2014-10-06 21:02
A parent of an elementary school student Having a 2 hour early dismissal on Columbus and Veteran's Days makes it very difficult for families whose parents are off on those days and want to have a long family weekend. 2014-10-06 21:25
A parent of an elementary school student Sounds good though I would like spring break to be shortened anyway, and not have a whole week in order to end the school year earlier. 2014-10-06 21:36
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Would love to see the Thanksgiving holiday cut down to the day before and the day after off. 2014-10-06 21:54
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student How about an early dismissal on that last day before Winter Break? 2014-10-06 22:05
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Please push the start of school to aug 31, change the February 2 hour early dismissal on the 10th to the 12th to start off the long weekend. In order to start aug 31 - take days off of spring break. 2014-10-06 22:05
A parent of an elementary school student School should not start until after Labor Day! 2014-10-06 22:09
A parent of a middle school student Please have students start back after labor day. Take away some days from calendar and have them go back after labor day. 2014-10-06 22:47
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Please add inclement weather days to the end of the school year, rather than to the week preceding Easter. Please shift the schedule on the end-of-semester testing days to be two-hour delayed start, rather than two-hour early dismissals. 2014-10-07 00:24
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Start after labor day 2014-10-07 04:59
A parent of a high school student Start school after Labor Day. 2014-10-07 05:15
A parent of a middle school student Looks good to me - I think 6/15/16 should be the final end date of the school year. 2014-10-07 05:23
A parent of an elementary school student Students should have Veteran's Day off. Why do they have select religious holidays off, but not Veteran's Day? Who chooses the religious holidays to observe? There are MANY religious holidays, yet they are only out of school for certain ones. This country is free because of our Veterans. We should observe that. 2014-10-07 05:34
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I would love to see the district eliminate the spring break and allow the kids to get out earlier in June. If you have a child who plays high school sports you have to be here to practice and therefore can't travel. They are punished if they miss practice. It is also a very expensive time to travel due to the Easter holiday that it piggy backs every year. 2014-10-07 05:45
A parent of an elementary school student Please consider starting school after Labor Day. Get rid of these 1 day breaks after each marking period. Why do we need 2 days off after Highschool finals?Shorten Spring break to the Friday before and Mon. after. Thanksgiving break is too long too. Would rather have a longer summer break!! 2014-10-07 06:16
A parent of an elementary school student Make January have more full days of school - there's that 2 week period that they're hardly in class between early dismissals, holidays and closing for teacher workshops. Also, a full week off at Thanksgiving is too much with the winter break coming right after. 2014-10-07 06:21
A parent of an elementary school student Start after Labor Day and shorten Thanksgiving Break. 2014-10-07 06:26
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Please consider eliminating all the miscellaneous days off during the year for jewish holidays, teacher 2014-10-07 06:27
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I would like us to get our earlier in june, why do we need 6 days off at easter when less than 1/2 of the population of america goes to church? I would like us to go back to 3-4 days off at easter as we had about 5 years ago, that was much better, some of us can only take time off in june and that is when we are able to have our family vacations. thank you for taking my comments. 2014-10-07 06:30
A parent of an elementary school student stop closing for Jewish Holidays. Rather allow for an excused absence for those impacted. The closings are too disruptive early in the school year 2014-10-07 06:32
A parent of an elementary school student This current year I was so pleased to see that the early dismissals were moved to coincide with Columbus Day and Veteran's Day since any parents were already off. This draft seems to move away from that for October - I hope that can be looked at again. Also, the January insanity (holiday - followed by 4 early dismissals-followed by two full days off) is an annual stressor for families. All kids getting off early for high school assessments is ridiculous! Especially when happening in one of the snowiest months of the year. Unnecessarily stressful for families and kids. I appreciate getting to share feedback and know that you have a very difficult balance to attain! 2014-10-07 06:36
A parent of a high school student I would like the school year to start AFTER Labor Day, and for the school year to end later in June. 2014-10-07 06:37
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I think that it is much more clear than ever before and as a working family I appreciate the detail in this calendar update. 2014-10-07 06:46

An AACPS employee, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student would like to see a shorter spring break to help end the school year sooner and no so many other days off during the school year 2014-10-07 07:14
An AACPS employee Has there been any consideration to honoring Veteran's day? We have the Annapolis, Arundel, and Meade Feeder system with a large population of military families that we serve. 2014-10-07 07:15
A parent of a high school student Schools need to start after Labor Day, they don't need a full week off at Thanksgiving or during spring break 2014-10-07 07:18
A parent of an elementary school student Would like to see Christmas break begin on the 22 so that people may travel to see family and arrive before the holiday. It is very hazardous to rush when traveling this time of year. 2014-10-07 07:51
A parent of an elementary school student Although I understand the need to make up snow days, pulling them from the Spring Break calendar is a problem because many people travel during that time. Last year, when one of the days was scheduled, I had already planned to travel out of state and did not change those plans. What ends up happening is low attendance on those make-up days, rendering them ineffective. 2014-10-07 08:00
A parent of an elementary school student I like everything except I would prefer if the kids didn't start until after Labor Day. 2014-10-07 08:01
A parent of a middle school student Too early of a start date. Reduce days off during the year to accommodate start date of day after Labor Day. Managed to do this for many many years, it can be done. 2014-10-07 08:04
A parent of a high school student I would like to see an increase on the days kids have off for Christmas. It is hard to enjoy the Holidays and plan trips with in such a short break. Days could be handled by starting school a few day earlier in August. 2014-10-07 08:20
A parent of an elementary school student, Other Instead of adding days at the end of the year for making up inclement weather, I would like to ask the county to use Federal Holidays, Spring Break, Easter Break first. Also, most other counties do not have off the whole week of Thanksgiving. I would reccomend that the kids go to school Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving Week. Conferences can be done the evening of Monday and Tuesday and 1/2 the day on Wednesday. Conferences can also take place in the evening prior to the week of Thanksgiving. 2014-10-07 08:29
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a high school student If the number of snow days/ inclement weather closings go over the 5 allotted, I think the remaining days should be split evenly between the Spring Break and the end of the school year versus all during Spring Break. 2014-10-07 08:30
A parent of an elementary school student I would like the board to consider Veteran's Day as an official school closing. Veteran's Day is a designated Federal Holiday and AACPS does not recognize this day or Columbus Day. According to the US census for years 2008-2012, there are 56,624 veterans living AA county. This does not include active duty service members or the federal employees living and working in AA county. Internet research indicates there is only a .22% Jewish religion living in AA county, however AA schools are closed for two days in September in observance of Jewish holidays. 2014-10-07 09:06
A parent of a middle school student I like that the spring break will be used for additional snow days vs extending school time into the summer. It makes spring break vacations more difficult but summer vacations easier to plan. 2014-10-07 09:10
A parent of a high school student My opinion is the school system sends them back to early and they get out of school to late. I feel they should not have of so many days during the school winter. Let the children have a summer and spend time with their families . 2014-10-07 09:29
A parent of an elementary school student Instead of taking from the Easter Break, schools should be open on other days like President's day or Columbus day. 2014-10-07 09:42
A parent of a high school student I think Spring Break is too long. Shortening it would allow extra days for a later start in August or an earlier dismissal in June. 2014-10-07 09:45
A parent of an elementary school student Considering the county only has a 1.5 percent or less Jewish population, it makes zero sense to have two additional days off in September to celebrate these holidays when school has only just begun and students and teachers already received Labor Day off. Instead of taking days off for holidays the vast majority of AA county residents do not celebrate, how about instead taking Columbus Day off in October and shortening the school year by another day. Wouldn't that save money just in bus usage alone? Additionally, the day teachers get off for the MSEA convention in October is repugnant. Is there anything wrong with teacher development? Of course not, but teacher's already get a lot of days off and early dismissals for this purpose. A mere glance at the MSEA schedule shows the two day conference is really just two half days and conveniently enough in Ocean city each year -- a location as inconvenient as possible for the majority of residents of the state of Maryland. The school district should not give teachers a free day off and should suggest to MSEA that the convention be held on the weekend instead. Further, since teachers are currently given the day off as a professional development day, are teachers required to prove that they attended the conference in lieu of just taking the day off? Finally, if the two holidays that 98.5 percent of AA county residents do not celebrate in September were combined with the MSEA convention day off in October, school could actually get out a week earlier on June 10th instead of June 15th. How much could be saved on bussing, crossing guards, kitchen and janitorial staff if school got out three days earlier? How much money are these unnecessary days off costing the school district and the county taxpayers? 2014-10-07 09:59
A parent of a high school student I think that Teacher Developement Days should be built into the summer schedule and they should not be additional days off of school throughout the year. This would allow the the children to have longer much needed breaks with families and friends (i.e.- start after Labor day). I am all about teachers growing professionally and personally, but my understanding is that teachers are paid based on a year round salary despite not working year round, much the way the rest of America works. This also can help alleviate challenges for us working parents who do work year round, but are foraced to take random days due to "developement days". Shonna Hackett 2014-10-07 10:19
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, Other I do not believe that we should take all Jewish holidays off. I think that students of that religion should be able to take off and be excused as provided in the county student handbook. I also believe that there should not be in-service days. The school year is too long. 2014-10-07 10:49
A parent of a high school student   2014-10-07 10:56
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I believe we should be adding more than 1 extra day inclement weather day. Also it should be clearly stated that in the event of major school closings, waivers will be made available to the schools requesting them. NOT ONE SINGLE parent I've spoken to wants any days added to the end of the school year. 2014-10-07 11:28
An AACPS employee The first week of school should be 2-hour early dismissal for elementary students. 2014-10-07 11:43
A parent of a middle school student November 11 Professional Development. Two-hour early dismissal for all students. Schools closed for p.m. Prekindergarten and ECI students Move this to Friday November 20 before Thanksgiving holiday Feb 10 Professional Development. Two-hour early dismissal for all students. Schools closed for p.m. Prekindergarten and ECI students. Move this day to Friday Feb 12th before the President's day weekend. These moves provides less disruption to the middle of the week. 2014-10-07 11:56
Other School should not start until after Labor Day for more reasons than can be listed here. Days lost to inclement weather should be taken from the end of school rather than an existing vacation day schedule. 2014-10-07 12:53
A parent of a high school student Take away the spring break and let them out earlier at the end of the year. 2014-10-07 12:59
An AACPS employee Increase the number of Early Dismissal Days for teacher PD to one a month. Teachers need more time to work on CCSS and understanding PARCC Alter the day of the week. 2014-10-07 13:23
An AACPS employee As an employee and a parent of an elementary, middle school and high school students I would like to see Thanksgiving break be shortened and Christmas break lengthened. There is no reason that students have all that week off. Most people travel at Christmas and need the extra time. Being from Michigan, it is really hard to travel back home when we only have a few days after Christmas to enjoy being with family. Also, having students off for the whole week of Thanksgiving is a hassle for parents that work full-time. It is so much easier to get vacation time at Christmas rather than Thanksgiving. Parents need to keep their sick days instead of using them when kids don't have school. 2014-10-07 13:27
A parent of a high school student I don't see why an entire week off is necessary to celebrate the thanksgiving day holiday. I would rather see the school year start later or end earlier and simply have a long weekend, beginning on Thursday, to celebrate thanksgiving. 2014-10-07 13:38
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student   2014-10-07 13:57
A parent of an elementary school student Why can't Spring Break follow the week after Easter? Why have 6 built in days for Spring Break? Families can leave after school Friday before Easter or the Saturday (day before Easter). Then enjoy the full week off after Easter. 2014-10-07 14:17
An AACPS employee, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student While I do enjoy the week long break at Easter. If a shorter break would mean that we could either start after Labor day or get out earlier I would like the board to consider that for the future. The current changes proposed are OK. And yes to the 5th snow day! 2014-10-07 14:41
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I think the starting date is too early and should be revised especially when some of the other school systems surrounding the DC metro area do not start school until after Labor Day. 2014-10-07 15:25
A parent of a high school student I would prefer that the Easter holidays wouldn't be touched. Please let us enjoy spring break as planned. Thank you!! 2014-10-07 15:39
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a high school student I still do not understand all of these two hour early dismissals days for "Professional Development". It has gone from "Attacking the Gap" to "Professional Development". Especially with all of the Common Core curriculum changes, the kids need to be in school learning. For MS students especially it makes the classes those days so short they are completely unproductive. If the school system needs them to have these hours for development they should add a day to the teachers' schedule before school starts for the year instead of taking instruction time away from the students. 2014-10-07 16:36
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student The half days for high school testing are really hard on working parents to find care. I don't understand why these have to be half days, just find something for the high-schoolers to do after their tests instead of sending all the kids home early. Why should the high-school schedule affect the rest of the grades. Please end this practice. The kids have way to much time off during the school year and not enough time off for summer. 2014-10-07 16:48
An AACPS employee I like the layout of the upcoming calendar 2014-10-07 17:39
A parent of a high school student Take out the conference days around Thanksgiving and either use the days for instruction or allow all families to enjoy the vacation time. Most parents request rescheduled times anyway. Turn spring break back into a long weekend instead of a week. Are so many days off and partial days really needed? Especially at the high school level? How are the students getting all of their required instruction when they aren't there because of testing, graduation, holidays etc? 2014-10-07 18:35
An AACPS employee Currently all 9th, 10th and 11th grade students are able to take the PSAT which is funded by the AACPS. Administration typically runs over three hours. Next year College Board is changing the format and will make the test 30 minutes longer than currently. I ask that you consider allowing 9th, 10th and 11th grade students to be dismissed after taking the test, therefore having a two hour early dismissal for those students while all other grades would operate on a normal day except seniors who would be able to use the time for college and career readiness. Also you may consider allowing for a two hour delayed opening for the students taking the PSAT which would give them more time to sleep and therefore be better prepared for the test. 2014-10-07 18:41
A parent of an elementary school student Recommend making the 25-26 Jan dates "fixed" dates for students to be out of school, or adjusting the calendar now to put a 1-week buffer between tests and these teacher professional development days to ensure enough flexibility for inclement weather closures during testing without having to reschedule those dates. Last year my family ran into a number of other families in the airport who all ended up missing school for pre-planned vacations on days when we had expected our kids to be out of school. Teachers, students, and parents should all have firm dates that we can plan around, and it is REALLY nice to have a 4-day break for students that doesn't coincide with a national holiday when airfares are higher and vacation destinations are more crowded. 2014-10-07 20:07
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Please have fewer half days through out the month. Just make it a whole day off every every month! Finding childcare for all those half days is a nightmare. 2014-10-07 20:25
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I suggest to use the January 25/26 days FIRST to make up any snow days. Many travel over spring break, and to have to come on that Monday or Tuesday would break a lot of family's travel up. For high school examination day, why not have them go in to school LATE rather than dismiss early. That way, the students can be assured to get a good night's rest, and better alert for any test taking. 2014-10-07 21:03
A parent of a middle school student This calendar has the first day of school starting TWO WEEKS before Labor Day which is too early! I suggest delaying the start date to after Labor Day. Have the teachers begin two weeks before Labor Day (not the students) and use that time for their professional development rather than impacting the schedules of every student's family. Also, it doesn't make sense that due to high school exams, that all students must have early dismissals four days in a row. It would make more sense to have study halls at the high schools until the end of the regular school day. 2014-10-07 22:32
A parent of an elementary school student It would be great to not have 2 hour early dismissals. Aren't the teacher planning, conferences, and workshops supposed to be on the professional days or at weekend conferences. It's rediculous. It puts me out of a day that I could work and earn a living for my kids, because their bus comes early. There's a full week I cant work because ALL schools get dismissed 2 hours early because of HIGH SCHOOL exams! What do high school exams have to do with elementary and middle school children?? That's just rediculous. If u plan a conference don't let them interfere with our kids learning during the week. 2014-10-08 06:23
A parent of an elementary school student I would like to see school start after labor day. I would also like to see less days off during the school year for end of marking period and teacher in service, it makes the school year longer for the children, there are several half days for in service training. 2014-10-08 06:56
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student Please change all early dismissal days to late start days. Let the kids sleep in! Teachers can train in the morning instead of the afternoon. Only positive outcomes come from this change. Thank you for having spring/Easter break in March instead of April! Families that enjoy winter sports, like skiing and snowboarding, can finally enjoy the week together. 2014-10-08 07:51
A parent of a middle school student Comment: 19/~44 weeks of school are full weeks. That's almost 1/2 of the school year w/o full weeks. Makes it very difficult for parents. Suggestions: 1) October: schedule 10/15-Professional Devel. Day the same day as Columbus Day, when many parents are off of work. 2) November: Fold 11/11-Professional Dev Day into the 23rd/24th for elementary/MS teachers. 3) January: 19-22-why do elem/MS students have an early dismissal when HS holds exams. Eliminate early dismissals. 19/26 - better consolidation of these activities to decrease early dismissals/closures. The kids were just off for a break the month before (December). 8/21 days they don't have a 1/2 day of no school. That seems excessive, especially considering the volatile weather during this time of year. 2014-10-08 10:27
A parent of a middle school student Starting schools after Labor Day! 2014-10-08 10:29
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student Please think about eliminating the long Spring Break. It should go back to Th, F and Easter Monday off. That is plenty of time for vacations. 2014-10-08 10:44
A parent of an elementary school student I would like to request that the Thanksgiving holiday break be reduced to ONLY 2 days (Thursday and Friday). The extra 3 days could then be subtracted from the end of the school year. I feel that the Thanksgiving break and winter break are too close together. This is difficult for working parents and the kids don't need back to back breaks. The time off during the second half of the school year is needed more. Please strongly consider this request. Thank you! 2014-10-08 10:51
A parent of a middle school student I am all for the school year to start AFTER Labor Day and take those additional days from Spring break. I find it silly that they miss so much time during the school year for other miscellaneous days in ADDITION to an extended time off for the Easter holiday. Thank you 2014-10-08 11:04
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Start after Labor Day. Shorten Thanksgiving Holiday to 2 or 3 days. Shorten spring break to Friday and Monday only. 2014-10-08 11:46
A parent of an elementary school student They don't need a whole week for spring break. We never got that when I went to school at AACPS. 2014-10-08 11:54
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student Make 10/30/15 last day of MP1 and an early dismissal, instead of Monday 11/3/15. The successive January early dismissals are not effective for learning in elementary. Further, elementary teachers do not need four afternoons for grading. We can use planning time always, but this is not efficient in elementary level. With a new TAAAC-negotiated agreement in the works, why can't we differentiate between elementary and secondary for these days? 2014-10-08 11:57
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a high school student I agree with the calendar suggestions 2014-10-08 12:12
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student To assist with the inclement weather days, make January 25 & 26 regular school days. These days are schools closed for students for Professional Development day/Workday for elementary and middle schools. The children are out of school the previous week for the holiday and out half a day. 2014-10-08 12:23
An AACPS student   2014-10-08 12:33
A parent of an elementary school student Shorten Thanksgiving (only need 3 dats max) and Spring Break (4 days max), eliminate the full days off for professional development (2 hour early dismissal is adequate), consider eliminating Rosh Hashanah and Yom Yippur (those student who celebrate should be given an excused absence. With these changes, the kids would have less distruption to their school schedule and add approximately 10 school days to the regular school year. 2014-10-08 12:50
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student As I have commented/suggested for the past few years, our January schedule is absolutely ridiculous! Especially after a long holiday break, especially for working parents! Four half days and two days off for testing? Have you looked at any other county school schedules for January? I have, I looked at 13 of them! Not one of them has more than one day of and one half day due to HSAs. Take a look, see for yourself. Other school districts can figure this out. WHY CAN'T AACO?! 2014-10-08 15:49
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I believe school should start AFTER Labor Day. If needed, days could be taken away from thanksgiving week or spring break week. 2014-10-08 15:51
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student With brain based learning come to the forefront it is imperative that we give our high school students the correct time for testing to give out high school students the best chance for success. WHY DON'T WE MAKE THE HIGH SCHOOL FINAL EXAMS A 2-HOUR DELAY INSTEAD OF A 2 HOUR EARLY DISMISSAL! Studies have been proven that high school students produce better work when well rested. Change the calendar to a 2-HOUR DELAY INSTEAD OF A 20HOUR EARLY DISMISSAL! 2014-10-08 17:19
A parent of a high school student I would like the board to consider starting school after Labor Day in September. Starting after Labor Day would allow students to have an uninterrupted summer holiday. As for the current proposed school calendar for 2015-2016, I am okay with it as it stands. Thank you. 2014-10-08 18:06
A parent of an elementary school student Please consider starting school after labor day. 2014-10-08 18:23
An AACPS employee, A parent of a special school student How can I become part of this committee? I would like to go back to when spring break was just Thur, Fri and Mon. We should also incorporate our fall parent conferences on the Mon, Tues and Wed preceding thanksgiving. Early dismissals on those days. The Jewish holidays should also be removed. We are wasting too !any days on these holidays. Also we should start the children after labor day. Cut out some of these unnecessary days off. Professional development can also be done with Early dismissals. Check out some of the other counties. Those of us in the classroom are really disappointed with how our county has done our calendar. Just too many breaks. 2014-10-08 19:35
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student I would suggest starting Winter Break earlier than December 24. Could another day be removed from the calendar to make up for an additional Winter Break day? 2014-10-08 20:11
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student The numerous 2 hr early dismissals are unacceptable and an unjust burden on working families. These days need to be combined to make entire days off so families can plan accordingly. The early dismissals essentially require parents to take full days off from work, given the duration of the school day. 2014-10-08 20:59
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Please don't change the last day of school - would rather have days taken out during the year so that summer travel plans are not so much impacted by last day being later than planned. 2014-10-09 05:08
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Generally would like shorter Thanksgiving holiday and Spring Break, and a longer Summer: Can you take away 3 days of spring break so students can get out Friday June 10 instead of Wednesday June 15? Can you schedule parent teacher conferences after school hours instead of missing 2 days of school? (Thanksgiving break). Thank you for considering! 2014-10-09 05:45
A parent of an elementary school student - Start school after Labor Day - Shorten Thanksgiving Break - Shorten Spring Break - End School FIRST week of June I feel that between Thanksgiving and the end of January kids are barely in school. It's ridiculous. 2014-10-09 06:46
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student   2014-10-09 07:59
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student I am fine with the way that it is proposed in the draft. It is clear. 2014-10-09 08:27
A parent of an elementary school student I think to extend the school year due to possible inclement weather closings is ubsurd. It is already reaching way into summer. Kids look forward to their break; to extend the school is a shame. If anything it should be shorter. 2014-10-09 09:30
A parent of an elementary school student Please go back to starting the 1st day after Labor Day. Stop with all the in service days and holidays that have just started to be recognized in the last few years and have full two weeks off at Christmas/ winter break. Those two days they go to school during that two week Christmas/winter break time is ridiculous. 2014-10-09 09:39
An AACPS employee As presented, the calendar is favorable. The clarification of how snow days will be deducted from spring break will be helpful for planning purposes. 2014-10-09 10:15
An AACPS employee cut back on the Thanksgiving vacation by having schools open on Monday, Tuesday and 1/2 day Wednesday. Eliminate the parent conferences which are a waste of parent time and add these days to the week before Christmas Eve. 2014-10-09 11:30
A parent of a high school student Like the calendar 2014-10-09 11:50
An AACPS employee The students start date to occur after Labor Day in September, 2015. 2014-10-09 11:53
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student The snow day coverage can be increased by adding a few minutes to each day if allowed under Maryland policy. This is the method in which Prince William County Virginia covers up to 11 snow days without the need to add days to the school year, unless of course there are more than 11 snow/inclement weather closures. Just an idea. You may call me for further details. Greg Anderson 410956-2182 2014-10-09 12:48

A parent of an elementary school student Schedule looks better. I still don't see the need for "Spring Break" in April. Just give them the Friday and Monday if you really must, but is a an inconvenience to find daycare for that entire week in the middle of the school year. 2014-10-09 13:10
An AACPS employee, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student We do not need a full week off at Thanksgiving. Students, families, and staff would much prefer to be out sooner in June. The middle school conferences "led by students" are not productive and you don't see half of the teachers. High school conferences? Never heard of them. At the elementary level, there is enough testing, online viewing of grades, etc..for parents to be well aware of their child's success or weaknesses. These are discussed CONSTANTLY! The parents who are not available to consult with teachers as needed are not available at conferences either! It's ridiculous to set aside days for this. 2014-10-09 13:58
A parent of an elementary school student School should end by the week ending June 11th. I think that morning start times should stay the same. If we run into any issue with snow days we should give back days during spring break. 2014-10-09 14:49
A parent of a high school student Summer really isn't over until after Labor Day. But since it is so late in 2015, how about starting school August 31st and removing November 23rd and 24th, January 25 and 26th and March 28th. The students would still be getting 3 days off for Thanksgiving, 7 days off for Christmas and 5 days off for Spring Break. 2014-10-09 22:38
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student There are two many days off in September. Eliminate Jewish holidays and do not allow testing those days and excuse religious students from work. 2014-10-10 06:51
A parent of an elementary school student Lots of people in our county are transient use to military and government employment. The holidays are the time for all of us to travel to see family so please give another day or two to the winter break! 2014-10-10 08:13
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student school should start after Labor day when I was younger we always went back after Labor day. Families still are on vacations and in the past the week of August start backs always seems to have a closing for the holiday or early dismissal. 2014-10-10 09:04
An AACPS employee School should start 2 weeks earlier in August and release 2 weeks earlier in June. Students come back in August ready to learn; however, once Memorial Day occurs and summer begins, it is difficult to maintain their attention. Students and parents are not committed to school once warm weather arrives in late May. 2014-10-10 09:42
An AACPS employee Combine the PSAT with the two hour early dismissal. The PSAT is tiring for students and then we ask them to attend four classes. On top of that, the classes are 30 minutes long, making them virtually useless. 2014-10-10 11:08
A parent of a high school student Suggestion: A calendar that is tied to blocks of academic instruction without introducing holidays related to religious, cultural and national days off -- I definitely appreciate the care and concern of the calendar committee and its work, but as we become ever more diverse in the ethnicity and religiosity of the citizens who live in Anne Arundel County, I would like to suggest that we begin to see the academic calendar in a new way that will allow for the opportunity to have the type of instruction we know we want to have -- that is, the interdisciplinary thinking related and STEM project oriented instruction that is best done in project based blocks of time; while allowing for concentrated, daily instruction for mastering academic subjects. For example: August -- a start of the school year to assess student potential, interest, and identification of areas of particular need by using project based academic outcomes to expose students to ways their academic subjects relate to the STEM areas. Because we are a public school system that is presumably separating church/synagogue/temple and state, parent decisions to keep students home to observe religious obligations on holy days would be the prerogative of the parents. Sept Oct Nov -- let this be a block of concentrated daily instruction for academic subjects, with final exams and parent teacher conferences held before the start of a November break that would include the traditionally observed Thanksgiving holiday. December: Students would return for interdisciplinary focused project based opportunities to practice and learn for the three weeks between the end of the November break and the start of a 3 week winter break that would include the traditionally observed Christmas and New Year holidays. January to mid February Special STEM related projects; integration of subjects, focused reteaching where needed based on outcomes observed at the November parent teacher conferences Feb Mar Apr -- a block of concentrated daily instruction for academic subjects, with final exams and parent teacher conferences held before the start of the state and AP and IB testing seasons in May and June; May and June. Special STEM related projects; integration of subjects, focused reteaching where needed based on outcomes observed at the April parent teacher conferences. Sincerely, Mary Alice Gehrdes, Annapolis High School parent 2014-10-10 16:10
An AACPS employee Students and employees are more in need a the spring break than other days throughout the year. Is there another option of making up days. What do surrounding counties do? Do they get out earlier than AACPS and still manage a week off as Spring Break? 2014-10-10 17:57

An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student Please don't give 6 days for Spring Break. 2014-10-11 08:57
An AACPS employee I would like to start later after labor day and get out earlier in June like we used to. We don't need so many holidays and days off throughout. Condense and give us back summer 2014-10-11 11:21
A parent of a high school student I think the school year should start after Labor day. I also think the students should get Columbus day off like many of their parents do. Giving them a separate day off, i.e. this year the following Friday off, makes it harder for parents to plan a weekend together. 2014-10-12 09:33
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a high school student It would be helpful to all if the spring break was the same time as other counties next year. This year AACPS' spring break is the week before Montgomery County and that makes it hard to coordinate family activities for many. 2014-10-12 12:52
A parent of a high school student Students should not report to school until after Labor Day. You can extend the start date and cut back on some of the unnecessary days off during the year. The summer is being cut short especially for parents who have children who travel to spend time with other parents. 2014-10-12 16:01
A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student I think the school system should consider beginning the school year after labor day. I also think that the week before Thanksgiving have scheduled classes for half days instead of all classes cancelled for conferences. 2014-10-13 10:49
An AACPS employee If additional days are needed, take back days from Spring Break before adding additional days to the end of the school year. 2014-10-14 11:20
An AACPS employee Please start school after labor day or right before Labor Day. Aug 24th means Aug 17th for teachers - this is right in the middle of the best days of summer for the ocean, the beach, camping or traveling north of Maryland. Do away with the Thanksgiving break - this has become a joke with very few parents of middle school age children coming to the conference times. It has become a socialization/ go out for lunch time for the teachers. A whole week off at Thanksgiving and then the Christmas break is just too much time away from the class room. I am not considering elementary schools as I say the following - Conferences could be held on 2 evenings of the week closer to the time report cards are distributed. This could be in place of an in-service school day that teachers may have to do. We have far too much teaching time taken away from the classroom. 2014-10-15 08:50
An AACPS employee, A parent of a high school student Start school after labor day and remove days from spring break 2014-10-15 13:58
A parent of a high school student Schools should be in session on October 17, MSEA Convention Professional Development Day. This should be held in the summer when most school teachers are off. January 26, and 27 should be school days for students as well. These professional days could also be held over the summer. Eliminate MLK and Presidents day off. The fore mentioned could shorten the school year by five days. Spring break is too many days off. The school year has eleven two hour early dismissal days. Many of them are for professional development. The best one is on April 10, right after they have just returned from having ten days off, for the end of the marking period. School starts too early (August) and ends too late (mid June). I believe that parents input is of no consideration to Riva Road. 2014-10-15 14:24
An AACPS employee I would like school for the students to start after labor day. Take away the long spring break. I would also like to see conferences in the fall to be done on 2 hour early dismissal days and have the students go to school that week.Conferences should be on an as need basis. 2014-10-15 19:07
An AACPS employee Spring Break should be shortened. 2014-10-16 08:47
An AACPS employee ALl of the 2 hour early dismissal days that were placed in the calendar a few years ago should be removed. The professional development that takes place is a waste of time and could be better spent with work time in the classroom. Combine the early dismissal days into 1 or 2 full day professional development days. Go back to the old calendar where teachers and students only had off the Monday after Easter and the Friday before Easter. We do not need a spring break. Students would better benefit from a longer summer break. 2014-10-16 11:46
A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I would very much prefer starting school after Labor Day and extending the year later in June. I would also much rather see days off line up with those in the working world; I was off for Columbus Day, but the kids had school, but then they were off on Friday of that week when I had to work. Not very family-friendly! 2014-10-16 18:59
A parent of a middle school student As a full time salary employee, with a limited number of days off. Additional emergency days I am fine with, it is the multiple professional work fays I take issue with. They should be scheduled prior to and after the kids are out of school. It is a huge hassle for working parents to pay more for day care or have to take unpaid leave. 2014-10-17 12:17
Other I feel that the school year is beginning too early in August. August 31st is early enough. Students have the week to become acquainted with their teachers, routines, and expectations. Then they have a day off for Labor Day and the school year begins. I also do not feel that Jewish holidays in September are necessary. If Jewish employees and students wish to celebrate they should have the liberty to take off but the schools should not close. School just started and its routine is interrupted. The week at Thanksgiving is not necessary. Teachers wishing to conference with parents should do that during their school day or one day should be alotted for conferences not too. Most parents like to vacation during that week and they expect teachers to meet at another time anyway. A two week break at Christmas should be implemented. Most teachers are women who are responsible for family festivities around the holidays and should have more time off before Christmas. The Easter vacation is not necessary. Good Friday and Easter Monday is sufficient. A June 15th end date is too late. If you cut some of the fluff out of the calendar, students and employees could have an earlier start date to their summer vacation. This same schedule has been in effect for many years. It's time to take a look at modifying it. 2014-10-17 19:33
An AACPS employee, A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student, A parent of a high school student It always seems that there is a wweek in question--either we are starting a week too early, or getting out a week too late. Eliminate Mon, and Tues Thanksgiving week and Mon, Tues and Wed of Easter break, and you have an extra week to play around with for instructional purposes. 2014-10-20 13:46
An AACPS employee Eliminate the long Spring Break. Thurs, Fri and Monday is sufficient enough time 2014-10-21 11:32
A parent of an elementary school student Think about a shorter Spring Break 2014-10-21 11:33
Other There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to start the school year before labor day, nor to end it after the first Friday in June. Adjust the calendar to accomplish this by eliminating some "days off" that are of very questionable value. AND, you need to align what holidays you do observe with the state and federal government's dates. There are instances where the rest of Government observes a holiday on one day and AACPS observes it on a different day, or not at all. 2014-10-23 09:17

A parent of an elementary school student, A parent of a middle school student I think its not a good idea to change the times beacause if students get out later then go home and have 2hours of homework where does it leave time for high school student to get after school jobs or elementary and middle school students to so after school activities and just be children. There whole day is going to be spent in school and doing school work. Which means alot of student will be misbehaving in school because they have no time outside of school to just be children. 2016-02-09 12:45

A parent of an elementary school student My only concern would be the abundance of children who are now going to require after school care, are there plans to increase space for SACC? 2016-02-10 15:54
